Apex
The highest point of a roof where two slopes meet.
What is the apex?
The apex is the highest point of a pitched roof, where two or more roof planes meet at the top. On a simple gable roof, the apex runs along the ridge line. On a hip roof, there may be a single apex point.
Why the apex matters
The apex affects:
- Structural design: The apex is where roof loads are transferred
- Ventilation: Apex vents help with roof space airflow
- Aesthetics: The apex defines the roof's profile and character
Related terms
The apex is closely related to the ridge — while the apex refers to the highest point, the ridge is the horizontal line that runs along that point.
